Birth Date: January 25, 1936
Death Date: February 19, 2017
Farrel I. Kleem, 81, of Berea, passed away February 19, 2017, after a brief fight with cancer.
Daughter of Cyril and Helena Smith of Hanover, PA; sister of Phillip (Marilyn), the late Elna,
and the late Mary. Loving wife of 59 years to John; cherished mother of Ferris (Theresa), Helena (Andrew), Elizabeth, John (Cynthia), Norma (William), Anthony (Mary), Christopher and Cyril (Melissa); adoring grandmother of eleven; cherished great-grandmother of two; and an aunt and cousin to many.
Farrel belonged to D.A.R., and loved genealogy and Civil War history; especially Gettysburg. She belonged to St. Mary’s of Berea and was a twenty year volunteer at Southwest Hospital. In 2008, she was given the Spirit of Community Award from the City of Berea.
As many mourn, they also celebrate her life of faith in God and love for all people. She was an inspirational mother figure to many, and was known for her gentleness, warm smile, wise counsel, and generous hugs. She always opened her home to people in need, especially disadvantaged young people who needed a place to stay, something to eat, or clothing. Her home was a drop-off point for items for the homeless and battered women and children. Every Christmas season, she held a party to make blankets for the needy. She was known for visiting the sick and for sending uplifting letters or texts to the downhearted. Even as she was dying, she never complained, but took time to thank the nurses for taking care of her.
Visitation will take place from 4-9 p.m., Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, February 24, at St. Mary’s Church, 250 Kraft St., Berea, OH.
